LAUTECH don makes list of top ten world class scientists

 







A lecturer at the department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Professor Abass Abiola Olajire, has been rated as number three on the list of ten top world class scientists in Nigeria.

An alumnus of both the University of Ife (now Obafemi 
Awolowo University, OAU), Ile-Ife, and the University of Ibadan, he started his lecturing career at Ladoke 
Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso on September 2, 1990 as an Assistant 
Lecturer where he rose through the rank to become a Professor of Industrial/Environmental 
Chemistry in the same university in 2004. 


Prof. Abass Olajire is a Professor of international and national repute as he remains the foremost 
LAUTECH Professor with the highest number of publications and citations from Scopus and Google 
scholar databases. He is a seasoned scholar with over 100 scientific publications in internationally 
recognized journals, with 3965 citations and an h-index of 28. He was at the 66th position on the list 
of the topmost 100 Scientists in Nigeria from the Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics) in 
2015. He had his professional training as an Environmental Chemistry specialist at UFZ Centre for 
Environmental Research Department of Chemical Ecotoxicology, Leipzig, Germany in 2003, 
sponsored by the prestigious German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). He has supervised many 
Master and PhD theses/ dissertations and he has served as a Postgraduate and an Undergraduate 
external examiner to numerous universities, nationally and internationally and such institutions 
include Federal University of Technology Akure, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile- Ife, Afe 
Babalola University Ado-Ekiti, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria and at the College of Science 
and Technology, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, India. 
As parts of his professional accomplishments, the following were accomplished during his tenure as 
the Director of Academic Planning in LAUTECH: Establishment of a new Department of Statistics, 
in the Faculty of P/A Sciences, NUC Approval for the splitting of Academic programme from three 
to six new departments in the Faculty of Agriculture, Establishment of three new programmes in the 
Faculty of Management Sciences, Approval to all postgraduate programmes in LAUTECH during 
the auditing of Postgraduate programmes in Nigerian Universities conducted by NUC, which 
culminated in the publication of benchmark minimum academic standard for postgraduate 
programmes in Nigerian Universities by NUC. He wrote on Creating near-zero emissions of carbon 
dioxide (CO2) from natural gas flares (NGF) in Nigeria: a novel environmental solution: A report 
submitted to Shell – NIGERIA on options of reducing CO2 emissions from gas flaring operations 
and he is an author to the popular Chemistry textbooks (Small Abass and Big Abass) among 
University students. He has presented Technical papers at International Conferences organized by 
Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationist, An Affiliate of the American Association of 
Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).


Prof. Olajire is an expert when it comes to Academia-Industry relations from his previous and recent 
experience in the Spill Response and Remediation Unit, Health Safety and Environment Department 
of the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) from 2007 to 2008 and he has 
served as an Environmental Consultant in charge of Effluent Treatment Plant of Dangote Sugar 
Refinery section of the Dangote Industries Limited from 2018 to 2020.
