LAUTECH STUDENTS VISITS OYO STATE GOVT YESTERDAY 23-11-2020;Tendered their Demands,(Details)

Revolutionary greetings to the general public and students of this great citadel of learning. It is no longer news that the crisis bedeviling our institution, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso, which has in the last 5years been out of one crisis to another, resulting from series of strike actions embarked upon by the ac

ademic staff unions and other staff unions of the institutions as a result of non-payment of salaries and other allowances which was inarguably a result of the nonchalant attitude and lack of commitment to funding the institution by the then two owner States government of the institution (Oyo and Osun state) now fully owned by Oyo state following the announcement from National Universities Commission following a show of commitment and responsibility by the Oyo state government since the inception of this new administration and the maturity of her counterpart in Osun state to let go for a progressive way forward. This development didn't meet us as a surprise, as we had earlier on series of time requested the NUC’s intervention on the ownership crisis through our letter titled “PETITION LETTER FOR THE INTERVENTION OF NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES COMMISSION

ON THE OWNERSHIP CRISIS IN LAUTECH” dated 13/12/2019 with our major prayers being;

1 . N U C  as the regulatory body of university operation in Nigeria should once again wade in, in the interest of the thousands of Nigerian student caught in the web of this crisis, revisit its report as submitted by the MAFIANA Team and assist in its implementation.

2.LAUTECH has come too far for it to be allowed to be wasted on the altar of politics and undue ego present at play by politicians. Since the university is located in Oyo Land, the state should be allowed to own the university.

3.The teaching hospital in Osogbo and medical college over which billions of naira from LAUTECH TETFUND AND NEEDS ASSESSMENT plus other federal government intervention funds has been expended, should be ceded to Osun State as compensation.

This option is the only pragmatic way of resolving the persistent crisis in LAUTECH. This is more attractive giving Governor Seyi Makinde’s resolve to take over the university and fund It properly.

The earlier this is done,the better for our university.

We are grateful that all our major prayers were answered and fully considered.

It is pertinent to note that;

     Education is a social responsibility of the government to the masses and the common people, especially in a system where the level of illiteracy remains very high. Education can be generally regarded as an instrument which is pivotal to the accelerated development of any growing nation. It serves two major functions to human society and its environs. The first of which is to transmit the culture of the people from one generation to another so as to ensure the perpetuation of that society with its cultural diversity. The second is to develop the society through the development of its human capital. There seems to be no better alternative to education in matters of human resource development.

Therefore, any nation that is desirous of continuous perpetual existence of its people and aims to achieve respectable cultural identity for its people as well as accelerate the qualitative development of its society must, by necessity make education its topmost priority. Abundant research exists that clearly proves the relevance of academic education in promoting empowerment which in turn solves all critical problems militating against any developing country. Tertiary education has become highly paramount and is considered to be a noteworthy benchmark when measuring successful academic achievements. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology,Ogbomoso is a famed higher institution of learning highly reckoned with in the states of Oyo and Osun and Nigeria as a whole. It has achieved the esteemed status of best state university in the country on several occasions, meet several valuable criteria and producing graduates of the highest caliber . However, despite these noteworthy accomplishments, the institution suffers several problems that seems to know no end.

   Some months ago, the myriad of issues facing this institution threatens to bring the citadel of learning to its knees. Of all the issues the institution find itself embroiled in presently, the most cogent of them requiring immediate and efficient tending to are intertwined and primarily are:

1. FUNDING OF THE INSTITUTION                      The funding of the University system is one of the pivotal roles of the government. Some consequences of the inadequate funding of the school has been suffering from, thus far include:                                -Arbitrary increment in tuition fee.

- Inadequate Learning Facilities.                -The few Laboratories available are empty.                                                             -Unstable Academic Calendar.

-Inadequate Members staff

-Non payment of University Workers’ Salary

 - Irregular administration of the university

 -Non payment of gratuity and pension

 -Absurdities like disconnection of the electrical system due to huge debts and none payment of power bill.

 - Drastic reduction in students applying to study Lautech

2. OWNERSHIP ISSUE                                    The problem of the joint ownership of the institution was a problem eating away the survival of the university, it wears away the growth and development of the University. It became a very embarrassing situation when the two previous visitors failed to live up to their financial obligations.  In the past 8years, funding and ownership of LAUTECH has always been the major source of conflict between the visitors especially after each of the two states has established her own university which has resulted in the neglect of the 30year old University.  It has therefore predisposed the University to:

* Reoccurring  financial crisis.                   *Incessant closure of the university.    *Irregular University Academic Calendar.

In recent times, the best alternative to the university as regards funding is that the management run the institution on internally generated revenue (IGR). This proposal seems somewhat unreasonable and unfair when considering the fact that the IGR presently being generated by all resources within the institution barely even covers the everyday expenses of the institution,

     which is obvious going by the Wage Bill of the University:

The monthly wage bill of the University for a month is approximately 478million - 500million, while annually the school spends 5,736,000,000

Funds spent by the university on Accreditation exercise is not being added to the list because it is not fixed. And in time past, the university has always spent almost 300million for accreditation of courses in the main campus and almost 700million for accreditation of the medical courses in Osogbo campus.

Under ideal circumstances, the IGR is used to tend to matters in the university such as:

- Augment the monthly subventions from the Government to pay salaries

- Pay Gratuity of the retiring workers and staffs

- Covering the cost accrued from the conduction of examinations

- Health care and welfare of both staffs and students

- Maintenance of infrastructure

- Purchase of equipment and laboratory items

- Provision of facilities such as lecture halls and laboratories

- Investment and creating opportunities for students and the host community

- Provision of stationeries to the University

- Augment capital grants to the university

As it stands, students are the one suffering the most of this crisis when they are supposed to be enjoying free education.

•Exorbitant Tuition fee

•Health care

Thereafter students still bear the brunt of harsh decisions from the management, wasted efforts and elongated time on campus and this menace has to stop.

Considering the bouts suffered by the institution over the past 8years, the internally generated revenue is barely sufficient to cover the issues it is customarily allotted to tend to, not to mention adding new expenses to it.

For LAUTECH internally generated revenue to even become more substantial and reliable , stability must be accomplished and the incessant strikes the school suffers sporadically must stop. It is on this note , we hereby as students of this institution put forward our position and recommendations;

A. We appreciate the Oyo state government on her giant stride to shoulder the responsibilities and financial commitment to the university by                                                    Releasing monthly subvention promptly and regularly for payment of salaries.

B. We are happy with the decision of NUC to transfer the sole ownership of LAUTECH to Oyo state as this would help solve the long standing crisis that has bedeviled the institution. Hence, Oyo state  government should show more commitment to the                                            -Release of capital grant for infrastructural development                         -Payment of all outstanding debts owed the University.

C. Boosting the internally generated revenue through other means than any form of increment in the tuition fee payable by the students as we will not condone any form of hike in our tuition fee, we hereby recommend that,

      - Massive investments should be undertaken to boost the agricultural stock of the institution, promoting the crop and animal production level of the tertiary institution.

-The Oyo state Government should look for an illustrious son of the land to be appointed as the chancellor of the institution who will be committed to the overall development of the university

- The Governing Council should revitalize the university’s various commercial ventures which have virtually gone into extinction.

D. The Oyo state government should consider reviewing the tuition fee to reduce it in line with the macroeconomic situation of the state.

E. All issues pertaining to the welfare of students, most especially students  examination for the harmattan semester of the 2019/2020 Academic session should be completed before the year runs out.

F. The state government should help prevail upon on  ASUU LAUTECH CHAPTER to consider its continual solidarity with the NATIONAL BODY and rescind their decision to remain on strike for the interest of the students and progress of the institution.

As students, we stand committed to doing our utmost as students of this institution with all sense of Justice, Equity and Transparency, that the government meet up with her responsibility and functionality to ensure the continued existence of this citadel of learning, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso and take it back to it's greater heights.
